Migraines, tension type headaches and cervicogenic (neck related) headaches are three of the most common types of headaches and can occur in isolation or in combination.

Tension type headaches are caused by tension in the muscles of the head and neck. This tension may be caused by stress, anxiety, poor posture, weak muscles or excessive use of the head and neck musculature. Tension type headaches respond well to physiotherapy management aimed at improving the tension in the affected muscles. This may involve strength exercises, postural correction, stretches, massage, dry needling and strategies to reduced stress.

Cervicogenic headaches are headaches caused by dysfunction in the neck joints. These headaches are usually associated with problems in neck movement, such as reduced or painful neck range of motion. Cervicogenic headaches respond well to physiotherapy aimed at restoring normal neck joint function. This may include joint mobilisation, mobility exercises, stretches, strength exercises, massage, dry needling and posture correction or activity modification.

Migraines are a type of headache related to altered neural function in the brain. The exact mechanism behind migraines is still poorly understood, but it is thought to be related to alterations in the speed and sensitivity of the activation of the neurons (nerve cells) within the brain. Migraines are complex, and can have many different triggers. Migraines are best managed medically, in consultation with your doctor or neurologist. However, migraines can be exacerbated if they co-exist with tension type of cervicogenic headaches. These other headache types can increase the frequency and severity of your migraines if multiple headache types co-exist. Treatment of the tension type or cervicogenic component of your headaches can reduce the frequency and intensity of your migraines if you suffer from mixed headaches.
