Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is the medical term used to describe issues with the jaw joint. This includes pain, clicking, clunking, locking, restricted range of motion or excessive motion and instability. TMD can occur for a variety of reasons. It may be associated with a history of trauma to the head and jaw, dental work, bruxism (teeth grinding), jaw clenching, oral habits (e.g. tongue thrusting or frequent gum chewing), stress and tension, or connective tissue disorders that cause joint laxity (excess mobility in the joints).

Effective treatment of TMD requires a thorough understanding of the factors contributing in your particular case. If there is excessive tension in the jaw muscles and joint, then treatment will be directed at improving the joint glide and reducing muscle tension. If your symptoms are related to bruxism, then we will work with your dental team to ensure that our treatments compliment the splinting that is being used. If your symptoms are related to excessive mobility, then we will work to improve your jaw control and improve your muscular function. Understanding what contributes to your symptoms allows us to target our treatments for the best possible results.
